Yorkville police investigating unpaid Nigerian loan

April 12, 2012 7:04PM

Yorkville police are investigating an incident where a resident fell victim to a rampant e-mail scam. Police said a resident in the 100 block of West Hydraulic Street sent $1,050 to a person in Nigeria, police said Thursday. The Nigerian who received the money did not pay it back.

Police warn that any time residents are contacted by an outside party, be suspicious. Many times the scammers will promise large amounts of money if the resident can send some money for fees or processing. Once the money is sent overseas, it is virtually impossible to retrieve, police say.

Police say the adage applies: If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
