29 year old Okwuchukwu Anyaene admitted attempting to defraud a 64 year old woman from Stranraer out of £45,000. She’d already parted with £54,000 for what she believed were fees so she could claim her prize from the Spanish lottery, despite never having bought a ticket.

The woman, who’d recently been widowed, realised she’d been conned and phoned Police who were waiting to arrest Anyaene when he arrived in Stranraer last January.

It’s a bad thing people are doing to innocent people. Don’t fall for it like I did, it’s not true, there are some really really bad people out there.”

Anyaene, who is Nigerian but lives in London, was given a 12 month supervision order and told he must do 250 hours community work when he was sentenced at Dumfries Sheriff Court. He was told he could have been sent to jail. The court heard he was a small player in the scheme and the woman didn’t lose any more money as a result of his involvement. Police are still hunting those responsible for taking £54,000 from her.
